“Stairway” VS “Taurus”…YOU be the judge!

A federal judge in Los Angeles ruled Friday, April 8, 2016, that a copyright infringement lawsuit over the Led Zeppelin song "Stairway to Heaven" should be decided at trial. A trustee of late songwriter-guitarist Randy Wolfe sued the band claiming "Stairway to Heaven" copies the opening notes of a song created by Wolfe in the late 1960s. Led Zeppelin’s JIMMY PAGE & ROBERT PLANT have a date for a jury trial over the claim that they got the opening riff to “Stairway to Heaven” from a 1967 instrumental track from SPIRIT called “Taurus”.

A judge has decided that the 2 songs are “similar enough” for a jury to decide whether Page & Plant committed copyright infringement.

Spirit & Zeppelin toured together in 1968 & 1969, and the lawsuit says that Zeppelin may have been motivated to write “Stairway” after hearing “Taurus” performed live by Spirit.
