- the IBM Personal Computer was released in 1981.
- the “Live Aid” concert happened in 1985.
- Pan Am Flight 103 was blown up over Lockerbie, Scotland in 1988.
- Ronald Reagan was elected President in 1980.
- Mt. St. Helens erupted in Washington state in 1980.
- The San Francisco earthquake happened in 1989, during Game 3 of the World Series.
- In 1986, the space shuttle “Challenger” was destroyed on lift-off.
- John Lennon was assassinated in New York City in 1980.
- In 1981, an assassination attempt was made on Pope John Paul II in St. Peter’s square.
- Egyptian President Anwar Sadat was shot & killed in 1981.
- The Commodore 64 computer came out.
- The 80’s also saw the introduction of the Walkman, the Boombox, VHS video tapes, HDTV.
- MTV was launched.
- Motley Crue, Guns N’ Roses, Iron Maiden, Bon Jovi, & Metallica all came on the music scene.
- John Lennon’s “Double Fantasy” won Album of the Year at the 1982 Grammy awards.
- AC/DC lead singer Bon Scott was found dead of alcohol poisoning in 1980. Later that year, Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham died in similar fashion, marking the end of Led Zeppelin.
- Movies – Chariots of Fire, Terms of Endearment, Amadeus, Out of Africa, Platoon, Rain Man, Driving Miss Daisy, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, return of the Jedi, The Empire Strikes Back, Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade, Batman, Back to the Future, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Top Gun, Crocodile Dundee, Fatal Attraction, and, Beverly Hills Cop.
- 80’s signature movies – The Breakfast Club, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Porky’s, Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, St. Elmo’s Fire, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Weird Science, and, Valley Girl all came out.
- Seinfeld premiered on NBC.
- The “Miracle on Ice” happened at the 1980 Winter Olympics.
- Pac-Man, Super Mario Brothers, Donkey Kong, Frogger, Digger, & Tetris were all video games for the Nintendo Entertainment system, released in the mid 80’s.
- The Rubik’s Cube was introduced.
